Our Values, Through the Voices of Our Community

At Karis, our five core values—community, accountability, hope, growth, and empathy—guide everything we do. But what really matters is how those values are felt and lived by the people we serve.

Over the past year, Community Members shared reflections on their experiences at Karis. Their words tell a powerful story of connection, stability, and forward movement—often in small but meaningful ways.

COMMUNITY

You’re Not Alone Here

Again and again, Community Members shared how being around others makes a difference. Shared meals, group time, and simply living alongside one another help reduce isolation and build a sense of belonging.

For many, community is first a place of safety and grounding. Over time, it becomes a space for shared responsibility, mutual support, and lasting connection.

Honestly, the presence of others. I feel much better being around others. It’s easier to feel motivated.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Support That Builds Confidence

Accountability at Karis is not about punishment. Community Members describe it as supportive, collaborative, and encouraging.

Clear expectations and consistent routines help build confidence and self-trust. As people grow, they often want more flexibility—but still value the structure that keeps them grounded.

It helps me be accountable and set goals each month.

HOPE

Believing Change Is Possible

Hope shows up in moments of possibility—trying something new, rebuilding routines, or imagining a future that once felt out of reach.

Community Members often describe hope emerging alongside small, tangible steps forward, supported by staff who help break goals into achievable pieces and celebrate progress along the way.

It does feel like there’s a lot of ability to try things again.

GROWTH

Gaining Skills and Confidence

Growth is one of the most frequently mentioned outcomes. Community Members describe real changes in daily life—learning practical skills, improving communication, managing emotions, and building self-confidence.

These gains add up over time and help people move toward greater independence.

Everything; I am so much more competent with cooking and making food.

EMPATHY

Feeling Seen and Learning to See Others

Empathy is experienced in two important ways: feeling treated with kindness and understanding by staff, and developing deeper empathy for peers through shared experiences.

Many Community Members describe becoming more patient, more aware, and more compassionate as they listen to one another’s stories.

When I hear someone’s story, I gain empathy for them.

How Support at Karis Makes a Difference

Community Members consistently point to Karis’ mix of individual check-ins, group support, and crisis intervention as key to feeling safe, supported, and able to grow.

These supports work together—offering personalized care, normalizing shared struggles, and providing real-world opportunities to practice new skills in a community setting.

What It All Adds Up To

Taken together, these reflections show that healing happens when clinical support, structure, and community are intentionally woven together.

At Karis, this approach helps Community Members move from stabilization to growth—and toward greater independence—while staying grounded in empathy, connection, and hope.
